Road to 2024: BJP pitches for mayoral launchpad

New Delhi, September 17: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s bandwagon for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has begun picking up steam, with the party top brass rolling out micro-management to showcase the governance model of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre across the country.
The BJP will be hosting a mayoral conference in Ahmedabad on September 20-21 to build on the governance model plot of the Modi government.
Sources told The Raisina Hills that 70 selected mayors of the BJP-ruled municipal corporations will be taking part in the two-day conference in Ahmedabad.
While Modi is likely to address the inaugural session of the mayoral conference, sources further stated that the BJP chief JP Nadda will sit through the course of the two days to listen to the presentations of the mayors on their unique achievements, which will be further shared with the party’s other units for their scaling up and replication.
“In 2014, the BJP for the first time came to power at the Ranchi municipal corporation, and since then the party has transformed the local body to play a key role in the development of the capital of Jharkhand,” Asha Lakra told The Raisina Hill on phone from Ranchi.
When asked of the achievement of Ranchi that it would make a presentation in Ahmedabad, Lakra said that the revenue of the Ranchi municipal corporations has grown 20 times in the last eight years that the BJP is in power in the local body.
“Our revenue model has been adopted by the local bodies in Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and we have trained local bodies in these states, including Lucknow,” added Lakra, who is also the national secretary of the BJP.
The BJP national general secretary (organization) BL Santhosh is learnt to be overseeing the preparations of the mayor conference in Ahmedabad.
While Modi is keeping a close watch on the BJP’s plans to expand its bases, sources said that the local bodies would be the next launchpad for the saffron outfit to gain new voters across the country.
“We have selected 70 Mayors from the BJP-controlled municipal corporations to take part in the two day deliberations on best practices under the watch of the BJP chief,” sources added.
Modi is likely to address the inaugural session in the virtual mode, while a number of Union Ministers will also take part in the deliberations.
“There will be an exhibition of all the 70 municipal corporations where they will be provided with spaces to showcase their achievements. The event is being organized on the direction of the PM to bring the focus on the development agenda at the local bodies level, while it is part of the BJP’s 2024 Lok Sabha elections preparations, as part of the strategy to impact the voters with improvements in the civic amenities,” sources added.
