Rahul questions Pradhan in LS over examination rows

By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi, July 22: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday said that there exists an impression that the “rich can buy the Indian examination system”.

The NEET examination controversy was raised in the Lok Saha during the Question Hour. It was asked what the government was doing to overhaul the National Testing Agency (NTA).

“It’s obvious to the whole country that there is a very serious problem with our examination system. This is not just the question of the NEET but major examinations,” said Gandhi, while asking a question on the NTA overhauling from the Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan.

Ahead of the Budget session of parliament, the government had unofficially circulated a note in the media in which it was admitted the candidates from the tuition hubs were still dominating the NEET results. However, the note also argued that more candidates from other centres were also qualifying the NEET examinations.

“Now, the minister has blamed everybody except himself. I don’t think he understands the fundamentals of what’s going on here,” Gandhi said in the Lok Sabha on Pradhan giving explanations on the raging NEET2024 controversy.

“The issue is that there are millions of students in this country who are extremely concerned about what is going on and who are convinced that the Indian examination system is a fraud,” charged Gandhi.

The Congress leader further said, “Millions of people believe that if you’re rich, you can buy the Indian examination system, and this is the same feeling we as the Opposition have.”

After the NEET2024 controversy, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is also mired in raging row over the Puja Khedkar issue. The former IAS probationer had allegedly faked disability certificates to get into the coveted central services.

The UPSC has cancelled the selection of Khedkar. But a number of retired and serving bureaucrats have come out in the open on the issue of the reservation under disability.

Former chief executive officer of the Niti Aayog, Amitabh Kant, also has called for review of the disability quota amid the ongoing row. There are claims in certain sections that the UPSC selection process has also been compromised.

Amid the raging controversy over recruitment, the UPSC chairman, Manoj Soni, quit to take up a spiritual responsibility. While Sonie resigned from his post a month ago, the government is yet to accept his resignation paper.
