By Our Correspondent

New Delhi, August 22: “I have been raped twice while on duty in the Indian media,” said a woman journalist. She revealed “rape culture” in the Indian media.

In a long thread on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the woman journalist shared tales of sexual harassment, intimidation, and exploitation in the Indian media. She said that she endured all assaults to protect her income.

“Today let me speak my truth. I have been raped twice while on duty in the Indian media. The first was while doing food pages in a magazine,” said the journalist.

Without naming rapists and editors who sexually abused her, the journalist gave a long account in the backdrop of the RG Kar rape-murder of the second-year junior doctor in Kolkata.

“I had given birth 10 months prior. I was asked to come to the kitchen of a 5-star hotel by a f&b professional who had ‘something to show’ me. I was led through service corridors into a reserved room. I was 26 years old and I froze. The person (Mumbai high society) arranged my limbs and did what he wanted,” she stated.

The journalist had worked for 20-year in the Indian media with leading publications. “I was harassed by editor friends of the high society person, including several who have recently been outed as predatory themselves,” she further added.

Ironically, the journalist shared her accounts two days ago. But the search engine shows no media outlets picking up the story.

“In a major newspaper, an editor, friend of the first rapist, pulled me into the stairwell and said that if I did not do as he asked (bypass paid insertion rules for his friends) he would tell everyone what kind of a person I was because he knew about my ‘affair’,” recalled the journalist.

During ‘MeToo’ campaign, a number of women journalists had accused past editors of leading publications of sexual assaults. The woman journalist has given an account of horror in the newsroom in the Indian media.

She also stated that one of the editors who sexually harassed her died of “painful cancer”. “The gossip that has been passed around about me all come from the seniors in the industry, what kind of person she is. Icing out of opportunity, access, not even fame or designation,” further wrote the journalist.

Women Press Freedom has supported the journalist to seek justice. “We denounce these severe gender-based abuses and applaud her courage for speaking out against these blatant violations of human rights, particularly in a country like India where rape culture is often overlooked and justified,” said the Women Press Freedom.
