Rampaging BJP sends Opposition scurrying into herd
By Manish Anand
New Delhi, December 19: The Opposition camp is visibly alarmed at the vehemence with which almost 100 of their MPs have been suspended from both the Houses of parliament. By evening, the Opposition leaders were seen dropping their inhibitions to take on a fearsome foe – the rampaging Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Memory fails to bring a parallel for the manner in which the Opposition MPs have been kicked out from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Presiding officers of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha Om Borla and Jagdeep Dhankar respectively very enthusiastically took the voice votes of the two Houses to kick out the Opposition MPs for flouting the rules by carrying placards and banners and raising slogans to deman statement from Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah on the breach of security in parliament.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went in huddle with the leaders of the regional political outfits. At the South Avenue residence of her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, a Lok Sabha MP, the West Bengal chief minister told a select group of scribes that she has no inihibitions to even join hands with the Left. Matter of factly, she underlined that the Congress has just two MPs from her states, and that should make the case for wrapping up seat adjustment hassle free. Importantly, Banerjee dismissed the idea of a prime ministerial face ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, saying that it would be sorted out after the polls.
Ashoka Hotel in Chanakyapuri will host the Oppsoition block – Indian National Democratic and Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) – on Tuesday. Regional parties are seen to be relieved that the Congress is now grounded after the party losing power in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. For them, a mellowed Congress makes the task of yoking the grand old party in the efforts to force a one-on-one contest against the BJP easy.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal hogged the limelight yesterday as he called on Banerjee and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Bonding seemed warm with Kejriwal basking the warmth of empathy after receiving second summon from the Enforcement Directorate for joining investigations in the alleged liquor scam in the national capital. He sported broad smiles. Kejriwal has studied his Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren who throws the summons of the ED to the dustbins. He has done this several times and the ED has not yet laid hands on him. Kejriwal possibly believes that the ED couldn’t touch Soren because of the exorbitant political cost that may come as a bill to the BJP among the tribal communities ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Thus, Kejriwal is also set to take the people’s shield against the ED.
The Opposition constituents now are said to have compelling reasons to close ranks with leaders expressing fears that “brazenness of the BJP in steamrolling the parliamentary norms may only gain in scale in the coming days and weeks”.
