New Delhi, January 30, 2026 — Indian Railways on Friday achieved a major rail safety milestone by commissioning 472.3 route kilometres of Kavach Version 4.0, the indigenous Automatic Train Protection System, in a single day—the highest ever coverage achieved in one go.
According to a PIB media statement, the newly commissioned sections include Vadodara–Virar (344 km) on Western Railway, Tuglakabad Junction Cabin–Palwal (35 km) on Northern Railway, and Manpur–Sarmatanr (93.3 km) on East Central Railway. This marks the fastest expansion of Kavach so far and underlines the Railways’ push to secure high-density and high-speed corridors.
With this addition, Kavach 4.0 is now operational over 1,306.3 route kilometres across five railway zones, up from 834 route kilometres earlier. The previous single-day record stood at 324 km on the Kota–Mathura section.
On the busy Delhi–Mumbai corridor, Kavach has now been commissioned on the four-line Tuglakabad–Palwal stretch, significantly improving safety on one of India’s most congested passenger and freight routes. On East Central Railway, the system was validated through a live head-on collision test during the run of the Sasaram Intercity Express, where the train automatically stopped, demonstrating Kavach’s real-world effectiveness.
Western Railway achieved a landmark moment as the Sayajinagri Express became the first Kavach-equipped train to run from Mumbai on the Vadodara–Virar section. Further commissioning on the Vadodara–Nagda and Virar–Mumbai Central stretches is expected later in 2026.
Developed and approved by RDSO, Kavach 4.0 meets SIL-4 global safety standards and uses GPS, radio communication and onboard computing to prevent signal passing at danger, overspeeding, and collisions—even in low visibility conditions.
Indian Railways says the rapid expansion of Kavach reflects its commitment to safer, smarter and self-reliant rail operations for millions of passengers.
