NEW DELHI, September 27, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday flagged off the Barhampur–Udhna Amrit Bharat Express in Odisha, marking the launch of the country’s 12th train under the Amrit Bharat category. According to the Ministry of Railways, ten of these trains already operate from Bihar, and three more services are set to begin shortly, raising the total number of Amrit Bharat Express trains to 15.

Amrit Bharat Express trains have gained popularity among passengers, especially the middle class, for offering “world-class travel” in non-air-conditioned coaches at “highly affordable fares” — less than ₹500 per 1,000 km. Indian Railways described the service as a special gift of the “Amrit Kaal,” combining modern design, advanced passenger comfort, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

The trains also highlight India’s self-reliance, showcasing indigenous design and manufacturing. Prime Minister Modi has described Amrit Bharat Express as complementing the Vande Bharat and Namo Bharat trains, forming a “trinity” that is transforming Indian Railways.

Safety features include Kavach anti-collision technology, semi-automatic couplers, crash tubes, EP-assisted brakes, sealed gangways, vacuum evacuation systems, and for the first time in non-AC coaches, fire detection systems. Coaches are equipped with talkback units, improved guard communication systems, and deformation tubes to enhance passenger safety.

For comfort, the trains offer foldable snack tables, bottle and mobile holders, redium floor strips, ergonomic seats, improved berths, and push-pull technology for faster operations. Toilets feature electro-pneumatic flushing, automatic soap dispensers, and fire suppression systems. Special toilets for differently-abled passengers, fast charging ports, and pantry cars further improve the journey experience.

Indian Railways emphasized that Amrit Bharat Express represents a new era of safe, affordable, and modern train travel, reflecting India’s changing railway landscape.
