New Delhi, January 24: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday resumed his “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ from Barpeta in Assam. Gandhi has invited strong reactions in Assam with an FIR slapped against him by the Assam Police as the Congress seeks to force its ways into the state politics ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge has shot off a protest letter to Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah, alleging several attempts of breach of security of Gandhi during the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Assam. Kharge has alleged that the Assam Police have been lax in ensuring the security of the former Congress president.

Kharge wrote in the letter to Shah that “the Assam Police systematically stood by and allowed the BJP workers to come closer and closer to the convoy of Rahul Gandhi, breaching his security cordon, and endangering his physical security and that of his team.” It may be noted that the Youth Congress workers had also entered into a scuffle with the Assam Police personnel after a barricade was put up against the further movement of the yatra.

Speaking to supporters during the yatra, Gandhi said: The CM of Assam (Himanta Biswa Sarma) is scared, because the people of Assam have stood like a storm against the BJP government of the state. The crowd on the streets is telling that the end of the BJP government is near.”

Gandhi is spending significant amount of time in Assam as he will be touring various parts of the state on Wednesday with aims to regain the support base of the party in the state where it has been out of power for two terms now. Gandhi is clearly aiming to bring back the lost workers of the Congress who switched over to the BJP in the last few years.

Significantly, Gandhi will soon be entering into West Bengal where the Congress is faced with unaccomodative West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She has asserted on several occasions that the Congress would not be given more than two Lok Sabha seats during the seat adjustment talks within the Opposition bloc, the Indian National Developmental and Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). The Congress is staking claims on 11 Lok Sabha seats.

Gandhi has, however, said that he has close relations with Banerjee and the voices of the state party leaders may not reflect the views of the Congress on the seat adjustment talks.
