At a press conference in Delhi, the Congress leader alleged mass voter deletions in Karnataka’s Aland seat, citing CID letters ignored by the EC; BJP’s Anurag Thakur hit back, calling Gandhi’s charges “desperation politics.”

NEW DELHI, September 18, 2025 — Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday levelled fresh allegations against the Election Commission, accusing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of protecting “vote thieves” and obstructing investigations into large-scale voter deletions in Karnataka.

Speaking at the Congress headquarters in Delhi, Gandhi claimed that over 6,000 voters in Aland constituency had their names illegally removed from electoral rolls. He cited evidence gathered by the Karnataka CID, which, he said, wrote 18 letters to the Election Commission since February 2023 seeking critical data — including IP addresses, OTP trails, and phone numbers linked to voter deletions — but received no adequate response.

“This is not negligence, this is collusion,” Gandhi alleged, giving the Commission a one-week ultimatum to share the requested details. He warned of “bigger revelations” in the coming days, calling the scam a “hydrogen bomb” for Indian democracy.

The Congress leader also presented testimonies and visuals of affected voters, including cases where a single person’s identity was allegedly used to delete multiple names from rolls within minutes. He claimed the deletions disproportionately targeted Dalit, OBC, minority, and opposition-leaning voters through a centralized software-driven operation. Gandhi added that similar patterns were observed in Maharashtra, Haryana, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP swiftly rejected the allegations. Senior party leader Anurag Thakur dismissed Gandhi’s remarks as “hit-and-run politics” born of frustration. “A leader under whose watch Congress lost nearly 90 elections is now peddling conspiracy theories,” Thakur said, accusing Gandhi of undermining constitutional institutions and seeking to create chaos.

While the Congress continues to mount pressure for accountability, the Election Commission has not yet issued a formal response to the latest charges.
