Raghav Chadha Slams Growing Tax Burden on Common Man in Rajya Sabha Speech

By TRH News Desk

New Delhi, March 27: In a fiery address to the Rajya Sabha today, Member of Parliament (MP) Raghav Chadha raised concerns about the ever-increasing tax burden on the common man, stating that taxes are levied on every aspect of life—from birth to death.

Chadha began his speech by passionately highlighting the excessive taxation system that affects every stage of a citizen’s life. “Tax to live, tax to die – and tax on every breath!” he exclaimed, condemning the widespread impact taxes have on the daily lives of ordinary citizens.

He went on to say, “The burden of tax begins even before a child opens their eyes.” Chadha pointed out that even celebrating the birth of a child is not free from taxes.

“Distribute sweets to celebrate a child’s birth, and you have to pay 28% tax!” he added, underscoring the absurdity of taxes on simple joys.

The AAP leader continued his critique by detailing how taxes are levied from childhood itself. “Even playing in childhood is expensive – 12% GST on toys! School bags, shoes, books, pencils – everything is taxed,” he said, emphasizing the relentless pressure on parents and children alike.

Chadha further highlighted the taxes faced by young adults and adults as they progress in life. “Buy a bike at the age of 18, and you face road tax, GST, insurance tax, and toll tax,” he said, criticizing the way basic necessities are burdened by multiple forms of taxation.

The MP did not stop there, adding that even the dream of owning a home is overshadowed by taxes. “Even the dream of owning a house is taxed – buy land: stamp duty; materials: GST; construction: GST; selling: capital gains tax!” he lamented.

Turning his attention to the elderly, Chadha pointed out that their post-retirement life is also marred by taxes. “Even the pension of the elderly is taxed. After retirement, there’s tax on every medicine, treatment, and insurance policy,” he said, stressing the financial strain on senior citizens.

Chadha took a jibe at the government’s tax collection and public service delivery, saying, “We pay taxes like developed countries — but get services like Sub-Saharan nations!” His remark drew attention to the disparity between the high tax rates and the lack of quality services provided to the public.

He also highlighted the economic impact of taxes on the nation’s economy. “80 crore people in India rely on free ration – yet almost everything is taxed!” he said, pointing out that while the government claims to support the poor, the widespread taxation is affecting the purchasing power of the masses.

“FMCG sales are down, cars aren’t selling – taxes have choked the economy,” he added, accusing the tax system of stalling economic growth.

Chadha raised a crucial point regarding the government’s handling of public funds. “The government collects massive amounts of tax from the public, but in the name of public services, there are only promises,” he said, questioning the effectiveness of the government’s use of taxpayers’ money.
