Trump Announces Ceasefire Between Israel and Iran while Missiles Continue to Fly

NEW DELHI, June 24, 2025 – In a dramatic turn of events, US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran. An end to the intense 12-day conflict that gripped the Middle East is now possibly on the anvil.
In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump declared that both nations approached him “almost simultaneously” seeking peace, heralding the development as a monumental step toward regional stability. “Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, ‘PEACE!’ I knew the time was NOW. The World, and the Middle East, are the real WINNERS!” Trump wrote.
Trump’s announcement through social media posts came within hours of Iran ‘staging’ an attack on the largest US base in the Middle East in Qatar, the Al Udeid Air Base. Making a case of set up, Iran per reports informed Qatar in advance of the attack. Experts recalled similar de-escalation on parts of Iran following the killing of Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani.
Trump’s another post read: “Both Nations will see tremendous LOVE, PEACE, AND PROSPERITY in their futures. They have so much to gain, and yet, so much to lose if they stray from the road of RIGHTEOUSNESS & TRUTH. The future for Israel & Iran is UNLIMITED, & filled with great PROMISE. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!”
According to Trump’s announcement, the ceasefire will unfold in phases over 24 hours. Iran is set to halt its military operations first, starting at approximately midnight EDT, followed by Israel 12 hours later. By the 24th hour, the conflict, dubbed by Trump as “THE 12 DAY WAR,” will be officially declared over. “On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR,’” Trump stated.
He further wrote in the post that “this is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will!”
However, the path to peace remains uncertain as Iran launched a fresh wave of missiles toward Israel early Tuesday, even after the announced ceasefire deadline of 4 a.m. Tehran time. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that sirens sounded across the country, with defensive systems actively intercepting the incoming threats. Israel’s emergency service, Magen David Adom, reported three people in critical condition and others injured following the latest strikes.
Despite these developments, neither Israel nor Iran has officially confirmed the ceasefire agreement. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied any formal deal, stating on X, “As of now, there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations.” However, he added that Iran would cease attacks if Israel halted its “illegal aggression” by the specified deadline, suggesting a conditional willingness to de-escalate.
Experts are cautiously optimistic about the breakthrough but warn of challenges ahead. “This ceasefire, if it holds, could be a pivotal moment in averting a broader regional conflict,” Stephan Fruehling, a security and defense expert at the Australian National University, told the BBC.
Dr. Raz Zimmt, director of the Iran and Shiite Axis research program at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies, told The New York Times that “Iran’s missile stockpiles are depleting, and their shift to lower-intensity attacks suggests a strategic pivot. However, the continued launches post-announcement show distrust and the risk of a war of attrition if diplomacy fails.”
The ceasefire was reportedly brokered with significant involvement from Qatar, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance engaging in direct and indirect talks with Israeli and Iranian officials. A senior White House official told Sky News that Israel agreed to the ceasefire contingent on Iran halting further attacks, while Qatar’s Prime Minister secured Tehran’s conditional agreement.
