Trump Reveals Tense Call with Putin Amid Ukraine Conflict and Iran Nuclear Talks

By TRH News Desk

NEW DELHI, June 4, 2025 – US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social late Wednesday evening to share details of a 75-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, addressing escalating tensions in Ukraine and pressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The conversation, described by Trump as “good” but not conducive to “immediate Peace,” highlighted the ongoing friction between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the urgency of resolving Iran’s nuclear deliberations.

Trump revealed that the leaders discussed a recent Ukrainian drone attack on Russian airfields, which targeted docked airplanes. Putin, according to Trump, stated “very strongly” that he would have to respond to the assault, hinting at a potential retaliation.

The attack is part of a broader wave of violence, with Trump noting “various other attacks” perpetrated by both sides. This comes against the backdrop of Putin’s earlier statements labelling Ukraine a “terrorist nation.”

In May 2025, Putin aide Yury Ushakov told Russia-1 state TV that Ukraine was carrying out “increasingly frequent massive terrorist attacks” against Russian cities, a narrative the Kremlin has used to justify its military actions. Putin himself has accused Kyiv of trying to “disrupt” peace efforts, claiming Russian aerial assaults were a “response” to Ukrainian drone strikes on civilians.

The call also touched on Iran’s nuclear program, with Trump emphasizing that “time is running out” for Tehran to make a decision on its nuclear weapons ambitions. Trump asserted that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” a point on which he believes he and Putin were in agreement.

Notably, Putin offered to participate in discussions with Iran, suggesting he could help expedite a resolution. Trump expressed frustration with Iran’s pace, accusing them of “slowwalking their decision” and demanding a “definitive answer in a very short period of time.”

This follows Trump’s earlier warnings to Iran, including a March 2025 statement where he threatened “bombing” if Tehran did not comply with US demands to halt uranium enrichment.

The White House confirmed that Trump was not informed of the Ukrainian attack on Russian airfields beforehand, a detail that underscores the challenges of managing the conflict.

Trump’s post reflects a shift in his tone toward Putin, whom he has previously called “absolutely CRAZY” for intensifying attacks on Ukraine. In a May 2025 Truth Social post, Trump warned that Putin was “playing with fire,” suggesting that “really bad things” would have happened to Russia without his involvement.

Despite this, the Kremlin has often dismissed Trump’s remarks as emotional, with Dmitry Medvedev warning in May 2025 that such rhetoric risked escalating to “WWIII.”

Analysts note that Trump’s dual focus on Ukraine and Iran highlights the interconnected nature of global security challenges. Putin’s willingness to engage on Iran could be a strategic move to deflect pressure on Ukraine, where Russia controls about 20% of the territory, including Crimea.

However, the lack of progress on a Ukraine ceasefire—despite Trump’s earlier calls for a 30-day truce—raises questions about the effectiveness of US diplomacy.

European leaders have expressed disappointment over Trump’s reluctance to impose new sanctions on Russia, a step he has repeatedly threatened but not followed through on.
