NEW DELHI, June 29, 2025 – Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed openness to a face-to-face meeting with his US counterpart Donald Trump. Putin said that communication between the two sides is ongoing. A personal summit could mark a “new milestone” in bilateral cooperation, added Putin.
In remarks to Kommersant newspaper following the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit in Minsk on June 27, Putin lauded Trump’s resilience in returning to power. Putin hailed Trump’s political journey “exceptionally arduous, complex, and hazardous.” He noted the assassination attempts on Trump in run up to the November elections. “He is a courageous man, that much is evident,” Putin said.
The Russian president reiterated his support for Trump’s approach to global affairs. He, particularly, highlighted his engagement with the Middle East and commitment to resolving the Ukrainian conflict. Acknowledging the complexities involved, Putin said, “Real life is always more complex than any notion of it.”
He noted that Trump gained deeper insight into the Ukrainian crisis since returning to office. “I am convinced that President Trump is genuinely committed to resolving the issue on the Ukrainian track,” Putin added.
Responding to a question about the possibility of a personal summit, Putin emphasized that any such meeting must be “meticulously prepared” and result in tangible outcomes. “Like (President Trump), I contend such encounters require meticulous preparation and must yield tangible new milestones in cooperation,” he said.
Putin affirmed that “such a meeting remains entirely possible, and we would be pleased to arrange it.” He noted that under Trump’s leadership, Russia-US relations have shown initial signs of stabilisation, although many issues remain unresolved. He highlighted the resumption of operational contacts between the US Department of State and Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as coordination between security services, particularly in counterterrorism.
“We are moving forward,” Putin said. “We have good prospects for economic cooperation. American businesses are already showing interest and sending signals about their desire to return to our market,” Putin told the newspaper as quoted by the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
Trump and Putin have spoken on a number of occasions over phone. Putin had initiated the last phone call in which he had criticized the US bombing of the Iranian nuclear site at Fordow. Trump has spoken to Putin on phone on several occasions in his second term in the office.
