Govt tells Lok Sabha that work on Purnia Airport will begin soon

New Delhi, July 25: The Centre on Thursday said that all land acquisition has been completed for the Purnia Airport. Union Minister for Civil Aviation K. Rammohan Naidu told the Lok Sabha that the work on the Purnia Airport will begin soon.

The Lok Sabha MP from Purnia, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, sought details of the Purnia Airport during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. Yadav also enquired about the status of the Bhagalpur Airport.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced two Airports in Bihar, one for Purnia and the another for Bhagalpur. When will it be possible for the people to fly to Purnia in two hours from Delhi,” asked Yadav.

Naidu said that the work is progressing well on the Purnia Airport. “All land acquisition exercises have been completed for the Purnia Airport. After acquiring the land, the construction work will start,” added Naidu.

The minister, however didn’t give any reply on the question of the Bhagalpur Airport. While there exists an airport in Bhagalpur, it was never made operational.

The people from Bhagalpur and the adjoining areas have been agitating for the Bhagalpur Airport. A number of social media campaigns had been undertaken to press for the demand of Bhagalpur Airport.

While Bhagalpur is next only to Patna in size, the people rue that the public representatives failed to press for an airport for the city. Deoghar Airport on the other hand has become operational.

Purnia and Bhagalpur have found mention in the Union Budget unveiled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. She announced two expressways for Bihar in the Budget.

Buxar-Bhagalpur expressway will connect the northern extreme part of the state with the southern most city in Bihar. Bhagalpur and Banka are the order districts of Bihar with Jharkhand.

The Patna-Purnia Expressway will connect the capital of the state with the seemanchal region of Bihar. Purnia is close to the Nepal and Bangladesh border with Bihar.

Additionally, Sitharaman also promised a power plant in Pirpainti district of Bhagalpur. An NTPC power plant is already operational in Kahalgaon district of Bhagalpur.
