Chandigarh, December 14: Punjabi singer, writer and actor Babbu Maan along with film director Amitoj Maan and social activist turned politician Lakha Singh Sidhana reached Khanauri Border in Punjab in support of farmer leader Jagit Singh Dallewal.
They showed concerns about failing health of Dallewal, who is on a hunger strike since November 26. Babbu Maan called upon the people to join the protest. He asked the people to come to Khanauri and Shambhu borders in support of the farmers’ protest.
“Everyone must leave aside petty egos and join this noble cause. The opposition leaders and ruling party must understand that Dallewal’s life is at stake and it’s now the 18th day of his fast,” said Maan.
The three popular artists reached Khanauri Border a day after farmer leader Rakesh Singh Tikait called on Dallewal and urged people to support the protest. “Till Delhi rises to this protest, nothing will be done,” they said.
Interestingly, both Babbu Maan and Amitoj Maan were part of the pressure group ‘Jhujhda Punjab’, which included intelligentsia, religious leaders and also actress Gul Panag, right before the elections in Punjab during former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s tenure.
The group spoke about serious issues afflicting Punjab. They reasoned why the elected government be held accountable. The singers’ friendship with the incumbent CM Bhagwant Singh Maan is well known. They have acted in many Punjabi films.
He had even campaigned in favour of Bhagwant Singh Maan. Amitoj Maan and Lakha Singh Sidhana too have been vocal against big industries polluting rivers of Punjab (Budha Naala) through industrial waste, chemicals and also the negligence of the past and the current governments.
They sat in protest with students of Punjab University in Chandigarh. The farmers at Shambhu Border have thrice failed to cross the border and reach Delhi by foot amid heavy deployment of security forces by the Haryana Police.
Amitoj Maan expressed anger over the elected leaders. “No one is raising this issue in parliament. The MPs have been elected by the people,” said Amitoj Maan.
Dallewal’s family is at the Khanauri Border. Concerned about his health, Dallewal’s son asked: “If anything happens to my father, how will you face us. How can the government and the opposition leaders be so unconcerned and insensitive.”
Earlier also, Punjabi singers, actors, Sikh intelligentsia and Gurubani singers and religious preachers have supported farmers’ protests. Singer Babbu Maan was a regular at the Singhu Border. He enjoys a huge fan following with his followers reaching Khanauri Border. Maan said: “In elections, every single vote matters and in parliament every voice matters.”
