New Delhi, October 28: The Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has raked up the issue of the disaster relief fund in the campaign trails for the byelections for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. She alleged that the Centre is not releasing the disaster relief fund for the Wayanad landslides.

“You have seen disasters like landslides and floods, and politics has been played with you. It is a great shame that the central government isn’t releasing funds for the disaster victims,” alleged Vadra while speaking at a public meeting on Monday in Wayanad.

The congress leader charged that the Centre is not designating landslides as national disasters. “The same situation of landslides and huge losses were faced by the people of Himachal Pradesh, but the Modi government didn’t declare it a national disaster,” said Vadra.

The Congress general secretary is contesting the Lok Sabha byelections after her brother Rahul Gandhi vacated the constituency. Rahul Gandhi retained the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat after he won from both the parliamentary constituencies.

“What is the point of Modi ji coming here and meeting disaster victims but not releasing the relief funds? You need a robust mechanism for the due compensation. It is your money; it is your due; it is your right, and you should be compensated,” added Vadra.

She sought the support of the people to raise the issue of the disaster relief fund in the Lok Sabha. A major landslide had taken place in Wayanad this year.

“I’m asking you to support me in this election so that I can pressurize the government and resolve your issues; so that I can fight your fight for you; fight the issues that have plagued your daily lives; and fight for a democratic country that gives you these rights,” added Vadra.

She stressed that the “relationship between you and the people that represent you in Parliament, the Assemblies and in politics should be one of service”. “I understand my responsibilities. When I see you all standing here to hear me speak, I know you have come out of love for my brother. As his sister, I know how heavy his heart was when he had to leave you,” said Vadra on Rahul Gandhi vacating the Wayanad parliamentary constituency.

She recalled the support of the people from Wayand “when others turned their backs on him”. “Each one of you here in Wayanad gave him the courage to walk across this country for unity and peace. He has a deep relationship with you; he even tells me that you are his family. He doesn’t treat you like an electorate but as a family,” added Vadra.

The Congress leader asserted that “today, we are fighting a big battle, and he is leading that battle. We are all fighting for the values on which this country was built.” “We are fighting for the values of our Constitution: democracy, equality, and truth, and each one of you is an important part of this fight,” she added.
