Congress Double-Engine Gandhis in Lok Sabha on Anvil

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, November 23: The Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has taken a lead of over 1.50 lakh votes in the Wayanad parliamentary byelections. Vadra has established a massive lead over her nearest rival Sathyan Mokeri from the Communist Party of India.

The Congress candidate is comfortably placed in the Wayanad parliamentary byelections while celebrations are set to begin in her election offices. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee for the Wayanad parliamentary byelections is trailing at third position.

The BJP candidate Navya Haridas has made an impressive debut in the electoral politics by polling over 46000 votes so far. Haridas has more than half votes garnered by the CPI candidate.

Vadra with over 2.40 lakh votes in the latest round of counting is all set to register a massive victory from the Wayanad parliamentary constituency. Vadra is contesting an election for the first time.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had actively canvassed for his sister, Vadra, in the Wayanad parliamentary byelections. Gandhi had vacated the Wayanad parliamentary seat after he retained the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency.

With the likelihood of Vadra winning the Wayanad parliamentary seat, the Congress will get both the Gandhi siblings in the Lok Sabha. The Congress had two members from the Gandhi gamily in the Lok Sabha previously also.

After over decades of stints in the Lok Sabha, Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi vacated Rae Bareli seat for her son to enter the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. Her stints in the last Lok Sabha had seen Sonia Gandhi largely maintaining a low profile as her son Rahul Gandhi took the centre stage in the powerhouse of parliament.

Vadra, however, is likely to be an active Opposition member of the Lok Sabha. She had actively been campaigning the elections for the Congress. Vadra was the Congress lead campaigner in Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections where the party swept to power.

Vadra has earned an image of a combative orator for the Congress. With her in the lower house of parliament, the Congress will hope to add ammunitions in attacks to the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Vadra had pitched the alleged non-payment of compensation for the victims of the Wayanad landslides as her principal poll plank. She had sought support of the people to raise the demands for the adequate compensations in parliament.
