NEW DELHI, August 14, 2025 – On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu hailed the nation’s economic resilience, democratic values, and unity in the face of challenges. She urged upon citizens to uphold the Constitution’s core principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

In her televised address, the President recalled the sacrifices of freedom fighters, the trauma of Partition, and India’s successful transition to democracy, describing the country as “the mother of democracy.”

She noted that India’s GDP growth of 6.5% in the last fiscal made it the fastest-growing major economy despite global headwinds, crediting reforms, governance, and the hard work of farmers and workers.

President Murmu cited major strides in infrastructure, digital inclusion, healthcare under Ayushman Bharat, and urban transformation, saying these advances have reduced poverty, narrowed inequality, and boosted self-reliance. She lauded indigenous defence production, calling Operation Sindoor — India’s recent cross-border counter-terrorism strike — “a landmark achievement” demonstrating both strategic resolve and Atmanirbhar Bharat capabilities.

Condemning the killing of civilians in Kashmir as “cowardly and utterly inhuman,” the President said India’s decisive military and diplomatic response underscored national unity. She stated that “in our response, what was most noticeable was our unity, which is also the most befitting response to those who wanted to divide us.”

“Our unity was on display also in the multi-party delegations of the Members of Parliament that reached out to various nations to explain India’s position. The world has taken note of India’s stance, that we will not be the aggressor, but we will not hesitate to retaliate in defence of our citizens,” said Murmu.

She invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s warning against corruption, urging a collective pledge to eradicate it. Highlighting the role of youth, women, and historically marginalised communities in shaping Viksit Bharat by 2047, Murmu celebrated Indian excellence in space, sports, and entrepreneurship, urging citizens to embrace the spirit of Swadeshi and buy Indian-made products.

“As we march ahead in the Amrit Kaal, I see a bright future where every citizen contributes to the prosperity and happiness of all,” she said, concluding with a call for unity, dignity, and self-reliance.

Murmu also hailed government efforts to extend benefits of the basic amenities to the people. “The Jal Jeevan Mission is making progress in providing tap water supply to rural households. In the healthcare sector, we have been witnessing a paradigm shift with a variety of initiatives under Ayushman Bharat, the largest healthcare scheme of its kind in the world,” she said.

The President also stated that “as inequalities in access are removed, the poor and the lower middle-class also benefit from the best possible health-care facilities.”
