New Delhi, February 13: A day after US President Donald Trump spoke to his Russian counterpart, Kremlin said that no format yet has been decided on negotiations to end the Ukraine War.
Kremlin also rejected the speculations on Trump and Putin meeting in Saudi Arabia at a sooner date. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in a briefing that no specific agreements have yet been worked out on a visit by US negotiators to Russia.
He said that Putin and Trump agreed to maintain direct communication during an hour-long phone call. Trump dialled Putin to thank him for releasing an American teacher Marc Fogel. Trump said that Putin supported his efforts to end the Ukraine War.
“There is political will on both the Russian and US sides to find a settlement and end the war,” Peskov said in the press briefing in Moscow.
Kremlin reiterated that “there is a political will which was emphasised during yesterday’s conversation to conduct a dialogue in search of a settlement”. Kremlin remained evasive on immediate start of negotiations.
Trump had announced a meeting on Friday in Germany of the negotiations. He also announced that US Vice President JD Vance will be leading that the American side which also consist of the Secretary of the State Marco Rubio.
“There is agreement that a peaceful negotiated settlement is possible. The previous US administration held the view that everything needed to be done to keep the war going,” added Kremlin in the press briefing.
It stated that the “current (US) administration, as far as we understand, adheres to the point of view that everything must be done to stop the war and for peace to prevail”.
Trump also spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy yesterday to update him about his talk with Putin. But Ukraine on Thursday reiterated its resolve to defend the country from Russia.
Zelenskyy, however, in a post on X thanked Trump for his efforts to end the war. But Europe-based geopolitical analysts reasoned on Thursday that Trump’s unilateralism could be a roadblock to the negotiated settlement of three-year-long war between Russia and Ukraine.
