New Delhi, April 10: If the economic issues really guided the poll outcomes, then the incumbent governments in the election bound states in the latter part of this year may hope for pro-incumbency wave. This could be an extension of the verdict in the North-eastern states early this year where the mandates were for the incumbent governments.

The Ministry of Finance gave an account of the per capita income of the states as on March 15, 2023 to capture the economic trends in several parts of the country in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The statistics given out by the Central government may instill an air of confidence in the incumbent governments heading for elections later this year in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Telangana.

Also, the incumbent governments in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu may draw confidence that they have done well on the economic growth, at least for the rise in the per capita income (Per capita Net State Domestic Product at Current Prices).

The per capita income of Karnataka grew by 43 per cent to Rs 301673 in 2022-23 from Rs 265623 in the previous fiscal. The rate of growth in 40s according to the data provided by the Ministry of Finance is seen to be a mark of significant achievement, for Andhra Pradesh is an exception case where the per capita income grew by a whopping 72 per cent, which the experts ascribe to the low base effect.

While Karnataka goes to the poll on May 10, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Telangana are slated for Assembly elections in the latter parts of this year. These states have done exceedingly well in raising the per capita income according to the data of the Central government.

Chhattisgarh reported a healthy 36 per cent rise in the per capital income from Rs 120704 in 2021-22 to Rs 133898 crores. Madhya Pradesh also logged in a health gain of 47 per cent, as the state saw its per capita income rising from Rs 121594 crores to Rs 140583 crores in 2022-23. Rajasthan also reported a rise of 38 per cent in the per capita income.

Telangana also reported a 48 per cent rise in the per capita income from Rs 265942 to Rs 308732 in 2022-23. Icnidentally, Telangana’s per capita income is more than that of Karnataka despite being a smaller state. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is facing the spirited campaign from the Bharatiya Janata Party in Telangana. Congress is heading the incumbent governments in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
