Modi in Bihar Leads Development Poll Plank Ahead of Assembly Elections

By AMIT KUMAR

PATNA, May 30 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday in his 50th visit to Bihar as Prime Minister led a major development push in the state ahead of the Assembly elections later this year. He unveiled a new terminal of the Patna airport. Modi also laid the foundation stone for a greenfield airport in Bihta near Patna.

The Prime Minister’s visit underlined both political momentum and a strong developmental push in the election year. Arriving in Patna, PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for a slew of critical infrastructure and public utility projects worth over ₹50,000 crore. He sought to give a push to the narrative of a double-engine NDA government working for the benefits of Bihar.

Among the key highlights of the visit was the inauguration of the new terminal building at Patna’s Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport. Spanning 65,155 square meters, this state-of-the-art terminal has been built at a cost of ₹1,200 crore. The terminal is expected to enhance air connectivity across the state.

Further strengthening Bihar’s aviation network, the Prime Minister virtually laid the foundation stone for a new airport in Bihta, for which ₹542 crore has been allocated.

On May 30, PM Modi is scheduled to visit Aurangabad’s Nabinagar. He will lay the foundation for a Super Thermal Power Plant worth ₹29,947 crore. Once operational, the plant will generate 1,500 MW of electricity. The plant is hailed as a major project that will greatly boost Bihar’s energy supply and reducing dependency on external sources.

Reinforcing road connectivity, PM Modi also launched the Patna-Sasaram Greenfield Expressway, pegged at ₹3,712 crore. This expressway is poised to create a vital link between central and western Bihar. The expressway is expected to reduce travel time and spur regional development.

In a major step toward cross-state connectivity, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a 3.2-km long three-lane bridge over the Ganga River, linking Buxar in Bihar to Bharouli in Uttar Pradesh. The bridge is being constructed at a cost of ₹368 crore.

The Prime Minister is pivoting the agriculture growth story of Bihar around the constitution of the Makhana Board to boost the livelihoods of local farmers. The Union Budget 2024-25 has earmarked special provisions for Bihar. This will help promote the production, processing, and marketing of Makhana—a signature crop from the region.

In the education sector, the government has announced an increase in student intake at IIT Patna, alongside plans for four new greenfield airports and enhanced emphasis on food technology research, further aligning with the state’s development goals.

The Prime Minister with his frequent visits to Bihar is showing the state as a priority in the development vision of the NDA government. The Prime Minister is also bracing to lead the election campaign of the NDA with his development plank.

In April this year, the Prime Minister had inaugurated projects worth ₹13,480 crore in Madhubani, launched an LPG bottling plant in Gopalganj, and disbursed ₹930 crore in aid to women under the Rural Livelihood Mission.
