New Delhi, July 31: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has rebutted claims of Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah in parliament that the Centre had shared an advance warning seven days ahead of the July 30 landslides in Wayanad. Vijayan said that the NDRF teams were sought as a part of the Monsoon preparations, and no heavy rain warning was shared with the state.
Shah had claimed that the Centre had shared an advance warning on July 23 with Kerala on the possibility of adverse situations due to heavy rains. “India now has an advance warning system in place, which have been installed at a cost of ₹2300 crores. Kerala was told seven days in advance about the possible landslide situations in Wayanad,” said Shah in the Lok Sabha, as well as the Rajya Sabha.

Shah was replying to an urgent calling attention discussion on the issue of the landslides in Wayanad in Kerala. One hundred and fifty people have died in the landslides in Wayanad. The administration in Wayanad has said that there are some more people who are still missing.
“Between July 23 and 28, the Central Meteorological Department did not issue any orange alerts for heavy rains in Kerala. On July 29 at 1 PM an orange alert was issued for Wayanad. The Red Alert and the possibility of heavy rains for Wayanad were issued only on July 30 at 6 PM after the landslides had taken place,” said Vijayan in a media statement.

The Kerala chief minister stressed that the time was not for blame game. Shah had wondered in his reply why the Kerala government had not acted despite advance warning shared seven days in advance.
Vijayan also stated that the Geological Survey of India had issued a Green Alert with the possibility of minor landslides and rock burst on July 29. “By that time, however, the landslides had already taken place,” said Vijayan in the statement.

The chief minister of Kerala also stated that the Central Water Commission had also not issued flood warnings. “The Union Home Minister has presented information in parliament that is inconsistent with these facts,” added Vijayan in the statement.
The Kerala chief minister also stated that the state government had raised a demand for nine teams of NDRF as a part of the Monsoon preparations. Vijayan also asserted that the Centre should take responsibility for the consequences of the climate change.
Shah also said in parliament that the government is set to bring a legislative proposal on disaster management in the ongoing session of parliament. Shah had also stated that the states should proactively work on advance warning shared by the Centre with them.
