New Delhi, April 2: Opposition leader Peter Dutton is building grounds for parliamentary election in Australia around economic hardships. Dutton is claiming that the rising cost of living is the top issue in the Australian election.
“Families are working hard, and Labor’s cost of living crisis is making it harder to get ahead. I joined Jason McClintock, Fulbert, Priya and their son Aidan today to hear directly from them about rising power bills, mortgage stress and the growing cost of essentials like petrol,” Dutton said in a post on X after meeting the family of Priya.
Dutton said that “Priya is driving hundreds of kilometres a week and the costs are putting a huge strain on the family budget, in addition to mortgage costs because of high interest rates”.
“We have a clear plan to help families: – Petrol price relief – saving families with two cars around $1,500 for the next 12 months – Lowering inflation which will put downward pressure on mortgage costs – Helping make housing more affordable – Providing cheaper energy,” added Dutton.
Australia is approaching the federal election on May 3. Dutton is actively campaigning, emphasizing key policy areas and strategic initiatives to position the Liberal-National Coalition as a compelling alternative to the incumbent Labor government.
The Australian in a report said that “Dutton’s campaign has prioritized addressing economic concerns, particularly the rising cost of living”. The Opposition leader has pledged immediate fuel price relief.
Dutton has outlined plans for medium-term reductions in energy bills, aiming to alleviate financial pressures on lower-income suburban families. “Central to his energy strategy is a national gas plan intended to lower prices and ensure energy security,” added The Australian in the report.

Dutton’s focus on subsidizing the people with financial support to foot the petrol bill resonates with recent electoral themes in the US. Donald Trump also had pivoted his November election campaign around the promise to cut down the energy cost in the US. Agela Merkel lost the elections in Germany due to the rising living cost, particularly the rising energy prices.
The Ukraine War has driven the energy cost world over. Australian parliamentary election also is now coming under the shadow of rising energy cost.
Dutton is also promising a $600 million funding plan for key roads in Western Australia. In another indication of Trump’s impact, Dutton has proposed significant cuts in “wasteful government spending” in areas including education, health, and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
Dutton also appears to echo Trump as he has expressed concerns about potential “indoctrination” in schools. Labor has accused Dutton of copying Trump.
