Washington, February 10: U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a new memorandum to rename Fort Liberty in North Carolina as Fort Roland L. Bragg. Hegseth released a video clip of him signing the paper before landing in Germany.

Hegseth signed the memo shortly before landing in Stuttgart, Germany. He was aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17.

“The name Fort Bragg is coming back, but with a twist. It will not be named after the former Confederate general. Instead, the new name pays tribute to Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II hero,” said Lucas Tomlinson, a US-based journalist with Fox News.

Tomlinson mentioned that Bragg had “earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his exceptional courage during the Battle of the Bulge”. The famous battle was fought in Germany.

Hegseth signed the memo before landing in Germany to further connect with Bragg history. John Eisenhower, son of former U.S. President General Dwight David Eisenhower, wrote The Bitter Woods to celebrate the heroics of Bragg.

“Bragg had driven a stolen ambulance in the Battle of Bulge to rescue a fellow military man,” the book had documented the heroics.

Bragg drove the ambulance several miles to take the wounded to an Allied hospital in Belgium. Martz, the wounded soldier, survived the World War II due to the heroics of Bragg.

Yashar Ali, a US-based geopolitical analyst, said that “Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has signed an order renaming Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg”. “Fort Bragg was originally named after the loser and traitor Confederate general Braxton Bragg.  But this time, it will be named in honor of a World War II hero, Pfc. Roland L. Bragg,” he added.

Ali also mentioned that “Bragg once stole a German ambulance to save the life of a soldier from his battalion”. “This move undoes the Biden-era renaming, which changed Fort Bragg to Fort Liberty as part of a broader effort to replace Confederate-linked base names,” said Mario Nawfall on X.
