Chhava to Screen in Parliament Amid BJP Push to Maratha Valour

New Delhi, March 25: Parliament witnessed intense activity today as both houses tackled significant legislative agendas and faced spirited opposition protests. The Lok Sabha saw Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presenting amendments to the Finance Bill 2025.

The bill is a critical piece of legislation aimed at shaping the nation’s economic trajectory for the upcoming fiscal year. The bill, initially moved on Monday, includes proposed changes to the safe harbour regime for foreign investment managers, intended to encourage offshore funds to establish operations in India. This move is seen as a bid to bolster India’s position in the global financial market.

The session, however, was far from smooth. Opposition MPs staged vociferous protests over unpaid arrears under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for several states, disrupting proceedings momentarily. The demonstrations underscored growing discontent over rural welfare funding, with opposition leaders demanding immediate action from the government.

Despite the interruptions, the Lok Sabha pressed forward, with Sitharaman expected to reply to the debate later in the day, setting the stage for a contentious vote.

In the Rajya Sabha, proceedings were equally charged. The upper house debated the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urging its consideration. The session followed a meeting convened by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday with key leaders, including JP Nadda and Mallikarjun Kharge, to address judicial accountability amid allegations of unaccounted cash found at a Delhi High Court judge’s residence.

The issue remains unresolved, pending a report from a Chief Justice of India-appointed panel.

The day also saw political sparks fly over Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s remarks on amending the Constitution for Muslim reservations, prompting a privilege motion by the Congress against Nadda and Rijiju. The controversy fueled a stormy atmosphere, with the BJP pressing Congress for clarity, further escalating tensions.

Amid the legislative and political drama, Parliament is gearing up for a special screening of the film Chhaava on March 27, to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, and MPs. The event promises a brief respite from the intense debates.

As the Budget Session progresses, today’s developments highlight the stormy relations between the ruling BJP and the Opposition parties. The Congress, particularly, is questioning the BJP bid to disrupt proceedings of parliament.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged that the BJP as a matter of tactics is disrupting proceedings to divert attentions from pressing issues before the country.
