New Delhi, December 20: In the absence of the large number of the members of the Opposition, the Lok Sabha will take up crucial legislations for consideration and passing. The Lok Sabha has listed key bills to amend the CrPC, the appointments of the chief election commissioner and the members, as well as the proposal to amend a bill to regulate the digital as well conventional media platforms.

The three sets of bills slated for discussion and passage in the Lok Sabha have been slammed by the Opposition. The amendments to the Evidence Act are also slated for discussion and passage in the Lok Sabha. The highly contentious bills will be passed by the Lok Sabha at a time when as many as 141 Oppsoition MPs from both the houses of parliament have been suspended.

In a late night circular issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat, it has been stated that the suspended MPs during the period of their suspension will not get the salaries and allowances. The suspended MPs cannot attend the meetings of the standing committees. They can also not access the facilities of parliament such as galleries and chambers. In a way, the suspended MPs may possibly not have access to the parliament premises.

The circular came out on the back of the ministers and the MPs of the Bharatiya Janata Party coming down heavily against the Opposition MPs for mocking and ridiculing Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankar as the Trinamool Congress member of the Lok Sabha Jagdeep Dhankar mimicked him while his fellow colleagues laughed heavily. Dhankar later condemned the acts of the Opposition MPs, calling the mimickry by Banerjee disgraceful.

There are no signs that the government will yield to the demands of the Opposition that Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah make a statement in both the houses of parliament on breach of security in which two men jumped into the MPs’ chamber in the Lok Sabha and sprayed yellow gas. With both the treasury and the Opposition gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections, parliament appears reduced to a wrestling mat with the ruling party being seen by the political obsevers on a warpath against the Opposition.

While the amending bills to the CrPC have significant changes, the bill to regulate the media with the proposal to constitute an authority which can mete out punishment to erring outlets also has significant consequences. With no likelihood of discussions taking place in the absence of the Opposition MPs, the bills as drafted by the government may sail easily in parliament.
