Parliament: Congress to pounce on Modi govt over Manipur violence
By Our Special Correspondent
New Delhi, July 19: The Congress has made it clear that the Opposition party would seek discussion on Manipur violence in the Monsoon session of Parliament commencing from tomorrow. The Manipur ethnic violence remains unabated even after two months, accounting for over 100 people killed, thousands displaced, while there are claims that women have been raped and humiliated by parading them naked.
Jairam Ramesh, the head of the communication department of the Congress, drew the battleline as he said that the discussion on the Manipur violence in the Monsoon session of Parliament is “non-negotiable”. Union Minister for Parliamentary affairs Pralhad Joshi said after an all-party meeting that the government is ready to discuss all issues.
But the Opposition may not let the Modi government breathe easy on the issue of the Manipur violence, for the Congress in particular is seeking to turn the table on the BJP by charging that the Central government has not been able to deal effectively with the ethnic violence in the Northeastern state.
The Manipur Police in a tweet confirmed that the women have been at the receiving ends of the ethnic violence in the state. “All out effort to arrest culprits as regard to the viral video of 02 (two) women paraded naked. As regard to the viral video of 02 (two) women paraded naked by unknown armed miscreants on 4th May, 2023, a case of abduction, gangrape and murder etc was registered at Nongpok Sekmai PS (Thoubal District) against unknown armed miscreants and the investigation has been started. The State Police is making all-out effort to arrest the culprits at the earliest,” tweeted the Manipur Police on Wednesday evening.
This tweet by the Manipur Police is likely to add to the ammunitions of the Opposition and the Congress in particular to set the Monsoon session of Parliament for a stormy start. The Opposition, fresh from the Bengaluru meeting, is seeking a visible chemistry among the constituents, which will also be under the test in the Monsoon session in the backdrop of the ruling BJP in the past showing with ease the ability to expose disunity in the ranks of the opposition outfits.
While the Congress had been demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must make statement on the Manipur violence, the demand is likely to become a tug of war between the treasury and the Opposition benches. While Modi has not made any statement on the Manipur violence, Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah had visited the state but apparently failed to find the peace even while incumbent Chief Minister N. Biren Singh refused to resign.
