New Delhi, October 13: The joint statement adopted by Parliament-20 Summit consisting of the members of G20 decried terrorism in all form, while underlying that acts of terror pose grave threats to peace and security.

The unequivocal condemnation by terrorism by Parliament-20 has come in the backdrop of savage Hamas terror attacks on Israel, which left thousands dead on both sides of Gaza.  Interestingly, India has also accused Canada of being a safe haven for terrorists. Canada skipped the Parliament-20 Summit amid ongoing diplomatic spat with India.

“We condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including those on the basis of xenophobia, racism and other forms of intolerance, or in the name of religion or belief, recognizing the commitment of all religions to peace,” stated the joint statement, while adding “terrorism constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security”.

The joint statement stressed “we strongly condemn all terrorist acts against critical infrastructure, including critical energy facilities, and against other vulnerable targets. All acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.”

Effective counterterrorism measures, support for the victims of terrorism and the protection of human rights are not conflicting goals, but complementary and mutually reinforcing, noted the joint statement. “A holistic approach on the basis of international law can effectively counter terrorism. Efforts to increase the effectiveness of international cooperation should be strengthened to deny terrorist groups safe haven, freedom of operations, movement and recruitment, as well as financial, material or political support,” asserted the joint statement issued by Parliament-20 Summit.

The joint statement also stated: “In the light of our legislative, budgetary and oversight functions, we pledge to play our role in combatting terrorism and violent extremism.”
