New Delhi, April 26, 2025: It’s the duty of the king to punish the hooligans, said Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat in a subtle message in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Bhagwat underlined that while India holds no ill-feelings for neighbours, but acts of evils cannot go unpunished. Bhagwat was speaking in New Delhi after releasing a book ‘Hindu Manifesto’, authored by Swami Vigyananand.
Bhagwat, while speaking from India’s ancient scriptures, said that handing out punishment to hooligans is “dharma’. The RSS chief did not specifically mention the Pahalgam terror attack. He also didn’t mention Pakistan by name.
Yet, Bhagwat reiterated his statement made in Mumbai this week that India holds no ill-feelings for any. But the RSS chief asserted that if someone is hell-bent to unleash evils, then it becomes the duty of the “king to punish”.
“The duty of the king is to protect the people,” said Bhagwat. Making a reference to the killing of ‘Ravana’, the demon king of Lanka from the epic of Ramayana, Bhagwat spoke of complete destruction of the enemy for the establishment of ‘Dharma’.
The RSS chief spoke at length of India’s tradition of non-violence. Yet, he asserted that punishing the hooligans and not becoming victims of terrorism are also “Dharma”. Bhagwat’s statement is widely seen as an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s steps in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.
India has accused Pakistan of direct involvement in the Pahalgam terror attack in which terrorists gunned down 27 civilians by singling them out for not being Muslims. The civilians were tourists in Jammu and Kashmir while they faced the terrorists in Pahalgam.
Bhagwat, while speaking in an opaque manner on the incident without directly mentioning, gave a moral template for India to take punitive measures against Pakistan. The RSS chief also stated that if someone keep repeating the evils, it becomes the duty of the king to punish the hooligans.
Bhagwat spoke of the tenets of Hindu ‘Dharma’. “We don’t harm neighbours. But the guilty must also be punished by the king,” added Bhagwat.
The RSS chief’s mention of neighbour and duty of the king are being seen directed at Pakistan and Modi respectively. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) presided over by Modi took five steps as punitive measures against Pakistan post-Pahalgam terror attack.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a neutral probe in the Pahalgam terror attack. Pakistan has also decried India’s decision to put the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance.
