Opposition accuses Chief Election Commissioner of partisanship, allege failure to address voter deletions, fraud claims, and SC order

By TRH Political Desk

NEW DELHI, August 18, 2025 —The Opposition’s INDIA bloc on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), accusing him of acting like a “BJP spokesperson” and failing to address pressing concerns over voter deletions and allegations of electoral fraud.

Addressing a joint press conference at the Constitution Club, leaders including Gaurav Gogoi, Mahua Moitra, Sanjay Singh, Manoj Jha, Arvind Sawant, John Brittas, Dr Naseer Hussain, Tiruchi Siva, and Ram Gopal Yadav said the CEC’s remarks during Sunday’s briefing had further eroded public trust in the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Gaurav Gogoi charged that the CEC dodged all questions on serious issues such as the deletion of 65 lakh voters in Bihar, addition of 70 lakh votes in Maharashtra within five months, deletion of CCTV footage within 45 days, and allegations of one lakh fake voters in Mahadevapura.

“The CEC chose to attack the Opposition rather than answer the questions. It is clear the Commission is under the command of partisan officials,” he said.

The INDIA bloc also criticised the CEC for ignoring the Supreme Court’s August 14 order rejecting the ECI’s resistance to releasing voter deletion data in Bihar. Leaders said the Commission’s refusal to explain discrepancies had raised doubts about its impartiality.

Samajwadi Party’s Ram Gopal Yadav reminded that his party had submitted 18,000 affidavits on voter deletions as early as 2022, but no action was taken. Similarly, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra accused the CEC of “shameful puppetry,” recalling that Mamata Banerjee had flagged duplicate EPIC cards months ago without response.

RJD’s Manoj Jha alleged the CEC deliberately scheduled Sunday’s press conference to deflect attention from the “Voter Adhikar Yatra” in Bihar.

DMK’s Tiruchi Siva said instead of offering clarifications, the Commission had “raised more questions.” Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Arvind Sawant added that the CEC “behaved like the BJP’s spokesperson,” while CPM’s John Brittas declared the CEC had “forfeited his right to hold the position.”

AAP’s Sanjay Singh termed the CEC’s statements “illogical and factless,” questioning how massive deletions in Bihar and New Delhi could occur without any credible justification or addition of new voters.

The INDIA bloc concluded that the Election Commission had “failed in discharging its constitutional duty” of ensuring free and fair elections, warning that the credibility of India’s electoral process stood deeply compromised.
