New Delhi, February 16: The Opposition has hailed the unanimous decision of the Supreme Court to hold the electoral bonds unconstitutional. The apex court has ruled that the scheme violated Article 19. Also, the apex court has asked the State Bank of India to share full details of the electoral bonds and publish them on the website.

The Congress communication department chief Jairam Ramesh has said that the “Supreme Court has held the much-touted Electoral Bonds scheme of the Modi Sarkar as violative of both laws passed by Parliament as well as the Constitution of India”. The apex court has also held that the electoral bond violates the right of transparency of the citizens.

It may be recalled that a clutch of petitioners had moved to the Supreme Court to plead that the electoral bond scheme be quashed. They had argued that the scheme is discriminator. They had also alleged that the electoral bond institutionalized corruption. They claimed that the scheme was an indirect form of corruption.

Former Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad will be shortly holding a presser to explain the viewpoint of the BJP. Incidentally, it has also been claimed that the BJP had been the major beneficiary of the electoral bond scheme. The ruling party is said to have got more than 50 per cent of the electoral bonds since the launch of the scheme in 2017. The Congress has been a distant second as a recipient of the electoral bonds.

Ramesh stated that the “long-awaited verdict is hugely welcome and will reinforce the power of votes over notes”. He said: “The Modi Sarkar has been inflicting ANYAY upon ANYAY on the Annadatas while privileging the Chandadatas. We also hope that the Supreme Court will take note that Election Commission has been consistently refusing to even meet political parties on the issue of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). If everything is transparent in the voting process then why this obstinacy?”
