India-Pakistan Ceasefire Sparks Debate, Opposition Demands Special Parliament Session

By TRH News Desk

NEW DELHI, May 11, 2025 – After dramatic manner in which ceasefire between India and Pakistan was announced, Opposition began raising questions on the role of the US mediation. The Congress demanded an immediate session of parliament.

The announcement, first made by US President Donald Trump, has fueled demands for a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire’s implications.

According to senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted India’s DGMO at 3:35 PM IST, proposing a ceasefire, which India accepted.

Chidambaram, former Union Minister for Home Affairs, further stated that “at 5:25 PM, President Trump took to X to announce the ceasefire, followed minutes later by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who revealed that India and Pakistan would meet for talks at a “neutral site.”

“India’s Foreign Secretary issued a brief statement at 6:00 PM, notably omitting any reference to Trump, Rubio, or the proposed talks,” added Chidambaram.

The senio Congress leader claimed that “the timeline of announcements is intriguing.” Chidambaram remarked on X, highlighting the Foreign Secretary’s silence on US involvement as equally “intriguing.”

The Opposition swiftly seized the moment, reiterating calls for transparency. Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging a special Parliament session to address the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, India’s May 7 Operation Sindoor strikes on terror targets in Pakistan, and the ceasefire.

“The nation deserves clarity on these critical developments, first announced from Washington, DC, and later by the governments of India and Pakistan,” Kharge stated.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi echoed the demand, emphasizing urgency. “I reiterate the unanimous request of the Opposition to convene a special session of Parliament immediately. I trust the Prime Minister will consider this demand seriously and swiftly,” Gandhi wrote in a letter to Modi, shared on X.

Questions Cloud Modi’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ Political Gains

Other Opposition leaders amplified the call. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned the government’s silence on the US’s role, stating, “Why is the Modi government allowing foreign powers to dictate the narrative on India’s security? A special session is essential to clarify India’s stance.”

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien added, “The Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor were matters of national pride, but this ceasefire announced by Trump raises serious questions. Parliament must debate this now.”

The rapid developments have stirred unease, particularly as Trump’s announcement preceded India’s official statement. The Foreign Secretary’s omission of the US-brokered talks has fueled speculation about New Delhi’s position.

With the Opposition united in its demand for a special session, pressure is mounting on the Modi government to address the nation’s concerns over the ceasefire and its broader geopolitical implications.
