The Congress president, Mallikarjuna Kharge, charged that the Delhi airport roof collapse is just another shining example of rampant corruption under the watch of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Corruption and criminal negligence is responsible for the collapse of shoddy infrastructure falling like a deck of cards, in the past 10 years of Modi Govt,” Kharge posted on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Kharge gave an account of the infrastructure collapse in the recent years which had shocked the people. Kharge’s list included “Delhi Airport (T1) roof collapse; Jabalpur airport roof collapse; abysmal condition of Ayodhya’s new roads; Ram Mandir leakage; Cracks in Mumbai Trans Harbour Link road; 13 new bridges falling down in Bihar in 2023 & 2024; Pragati Maidan Tunnel submerging; and Morbi bridge collapse tragedy in Gujarat”.

Sensing renewed attack on Modi by the Opposition for infrastructure collapse, Union Minister for Civil Aviation clarified that the prime minister had not inaugurated the roof the came down crashing on Friday morning.

However, Modi had inaugurated the Pragati Maidan Tunnel. The showpiece tunnel has since inauguration facing issues such as seepage and flooding.

“The prime minister had inaugurated the other airport building. The roof that crashed today was inaugurated in 2009,” said Naidu, who sought to shift the blame to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Select media portals were quoting government sources, saying that GMR, the operator of the Delhi airport, had outsourced the construction of the part which collapsed to a private contractor.

“Today at 5 am, very unfortunate incident happened at Terminal 1, Delhi airport,” said Naidu, adding that a section of the canopy collapsed due to the heavy rains.

Till 2 pm, the flights have been cancelled from Terminal one of the Delhi airport, said Naidu.

But Kharge was livid at Modi for the roof collapse of the Delhi airport. “These incidents of infrastructure collapse are some stark instances which exposes the tall claims by Modi ji and BJP of creating ‘World Class Infrastructure’,” said Kharge.

The Congress president also said: “On March 10th, when Modi ji inaugurated the Delhi Ariport T1, he called himself ‘Doosri mitti ka insaan…’.” “All this false bravado and rhetoric was only reserved for quickly indulging in ribbon-cutting ceremonies before Elections,” added Kharge in his post.
