By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi, July 31: The Lok Sabha was adjourned during the Question Hour amid ruckus in the House over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur in his speech yesterday asking leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi to tell his caste.

The Congress MPs sought from the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, permission to raise the issue of Thakur’s speech made during the Budget discussion. Birla told the Congress MPs that they could raise the issue after the Question Hour.

Amid sloganeering by the Congress MPs, Birla pressed ahead with the Question hour. The Congress MPs were unrelenting in raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Congress communication department chief, Jairam Ramesh, had condemned the support of Modi stated through a social media post on X, formerly Twitter. Ramesh had said that Modi violated the oath of the office.

Ramesh had also accused that while Thakur’s remarks asking for caste of Gandhi had been expunged the Sansad TV had shared the unedited video which had been widely circulated.

The Congress MPs in the Lok Sabha demanded action against Thakur and also sought apology from Modi. Amid the ruckus, Birla turned to the Congress, saying: “You have no agenda. You are disrupting the proceedings of the House in a planned manner.”

Birla allowed Union Minister for parliamentary affairs Kiren Rijiju to make an intervention in the ruckus. “The Congress has hatched conspiracy against India. They have disgraced the nation,” Rijiju said amid the heavy sloganeering by the Congress MPs.

The Congress MPs who had given their names for asking questions didn’t take part in the proceedings. At one time, Birla turned to Gandhi, saying: “You are the leader of the Opposition. It’s not proper on your part to encourage your members to disrupt the proceedings of the House.”

Birla also said that the House will function in accordance with the Business Advisory Council (BAC) decisions. The Congress MPs mostly indulged in the sloganeering in the Lok Sabha.

Earlier, the Congress parliamentary party met in the Central Hall of parliament. The meeting held a two minutes silence for the three IAS aspirants who had died in the flooding of the basement library of the Rau’s IAS Study Centre in the Old Rajinder Nagar area.
