In Zohran Mamdani, Democrats appear to have found their most compelling answer to Trumpism — a 34-year-old progressive who electrified voters with a message of hope, inclusion, and economic justice, evoking echoes of Barack Obama’s early appeal.

New Delhi, November 5, 2025 — Victorious Zohran Mamdani thundered in his victory speech, asserting that New York City will remain a city of immigrants. Raising a war cry against Trumpism built around anti-immigrant sentiments, Mamdani rubbed salt to the wounded pride of Trump as he said that NYC will be led by an immigrant.

“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” Mamdani said, pouring power to build a blowback gust against Trumpian narrative in the US.

The crushing defeat of Trumpism in NYC sobered US Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem, who sought to rationalise the crackdown against alleged illegal immigrants. “No American citizens have been arrested or detained. We focus on those who are here illegally. And anything you would hear or report that would be different than that is simply not true and false reporting,” she said in a trademark Trumpism in which anything critical of the Trump administration is dubbed “false reporting.”

Congresswoman Maxine Dexter summed up the excesses by ICE personnel who drag and dump people, including children on the floor, to handcuff on belief that they’re illegal immigrants. “I saw with my own eyes four U.S. citizen children detained in a windowless cell, held captive by YOUR agents. Stop the lies,” said Dexter in a post on X.

Mamdani’s win in the NYC Mayor election has come at a time when the US is bracing up for the Mid Term elections next year. Democrats are sensing opportunities to monetise anger against Trump by the working class in the US. The extended federal shutdown has riled the working class against Trump and the Republicans.

In Mamdani, Democrats seem to have found a foil to Trumpism. The 34-year-old Democrat is getting credits for building a rockstar campaign, reminding the Americans of former US President Barack Obama.
