New Delhi, October 2: Claudia Sheinbaum created history by becoming the first woman president of Mexico. Also, Sheinbaum is the first Jewish woman president for any of the North America countries.
“Now is the time of transformation, now is the time of women,” said Sheinbaum after taking oath of the president of Mexico. Her Jewish background is in spotlight, for there are just about 59,000 Jews in Mexico.
Jews constitute less than 0.05 per cent of the 129 million total population. But the climate activist won the popular mandate to become the president of Mexico.
“Her two most notable achievements of Mexico City as mayor are attending the Pride Parade and mandating all school uniforms be unisex. I’m sure these two accomplishments really resonated with the 76 per cent Catholic population of Mexico,” said Sam Parker-ucas Gage, a US-based politician in a post on X.

Sheinbaum replaced her popular predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Mexico is world’s most populous Spanish-speaking nation.
Sheinbaum, 62, is scientist-turned-politician. She took the oath for a six-year term lasting until 2030. “She is North America’s first female elected head of state,” said Ian Bremmer, a foreign affairs analyst, in a post on X.
“Claudia Sheinbaum took office on Tuesday, the first woman and Jewish person to lead Mexico in the country’s more than 200-year history as an independent nation,” headlined the New York Times.
Sheinbaum’s feat is resonating in the US as well where the Democratic nominee and the incumbent vice president Kamala Harris is challenging Donald Trump, the ex-president, in the November election.

“Today, we witnessed history with the inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum—Mexico’s first woman president. Her words resonate deeply: Es tiempo de transformación y es tiempo de mujeres. It’s time for transformation. It’s time for women,” said Jeniffer Siebel Newsom, a California-based documentary filmmaker, in a post on X.
She stated that a “powerful new chapter begins, led by the strength, vision, and resilience of women”. “She (Sheinbaum) enters office with her party holding supermajority control in the legislature’s lower house, and nearly the same in the Senate,” said Al Jazeera in a report, adding that the new Mexican president “immediately sought to reassure investors”.
