New Delhi, January 4, 2026 — A New Year celebration in the Swiss Alps turned into a scene of terror within seconds. According to an ABC News report, Swiss officials now believe celebratory sparklers likely triggered the deadly fire at a crowded underground bar, killing at least 47 people and injuring nearly 120 others.
Investigators are closely analysing video footage from the night of the tragedy. The images show how quickly flames engulfed the ceiling, transforming a festive gathering into chaos. The video, filmed by a young boy who was himself seriously injured, captures the horrifying speed with which the fire spread.
As reported by ABC News foreign correspondent Tom Soufi Burridge, the footage reveals multiple sparklers glowing beneath the ceiling moments before an orange blaze erupts overhead. Swiss authorities say this visual evidence has become central to their investigation, although they stress that the inquiry is still ongoing.
At one point in the video, a man can be seen desperately attempting to extinguish the flames using what appears to be a piece of clothing. Panic soon follows. People scramble to escape as smoke and fire consume the bar. Survivors describe a crush at the exits, with many unable to flee from the underground venue.
One survivor told ABC News that the scene felt “like a horror movie,” recalling people breaking windows in desperation and falling out as flames closed in. Witnesses reported seeing individuals on fire as they tried to escape.
The human toll continues to unfold. Letitia, whose 16-year-old son Arthur had gone to the bar to celebrate the New Year, told ABC News she is still searching for her child. “All I want is to find my child,” she said. Another man, Gregory, said his best friend is missing, torn between hope and fear as authorities work through the wreckage.
Late on Tuesday, the bar’s owner told Swiss media that all safety standards had been followed. However, prosecutors have confirmed that fire safety conditions at the venue will now be a key focus of the investigation. The local prosecutor stated that the two owners are cooperating fully with authorities.
As identification of the dead and injured continues, officials say many victims remain in critical condition, fighting for their lives. In the ski resort town, memorials are growing, reflecting a community in shock and mourning.
The tragedy has reignited broader concerns about indoor fire safety, crowd management, and the use of pyrotechnics in confined spaces. What began as a New Year celebration has now become a grim reminder of how quickly negligence—or a single spark—can turn joy into catastrophe.
