New Delhi, February 16: The Railways on Sunday said that as many as 2600 tickets were sold at the New Delhi station in two hours ahead of the stampede that left 18 dead and several injured. The Railways also said that one special train had been announced after surge of passenger was seen at the station.

“It has come to the notice that 2600 more passengers booked their tickets at New Delhi station yesterday between 18.00 to 20.00 hours. One special train was started from the station in that time period,” said the Railways on Sunday.

The stampede took place on platform number 14 where Patna-bound Magath Express was boarding passengers. Video footages showed the platform choked. Passengers were seen to have transformed into a mass, pushing each other, before the stampede took place.

“Another special train was scheduled during 20.00 hours to 22 hours period, whereas booking of unreserved tickets was less than the average during to this period,” added the Railways.

The statement of the Railways suggest that an abnormally large number of tickets had already been sold that choked the station. “An unfortunate stampede occurred at New Delhi Railway Station on the night of 15th February, 2025 resulting in the deaths of 18 people and injuries to 15 people. At New Delhi station, Prayagraj Express was about to be placed at PF No.14,” added the Railways.

There was surge in crowd to board the trains heading for Prayagraj for the ongoing Mahakumbh, added the transporter. “Seeing the surge in crowd for Prayagraj, a special train was announced for Prayagraj from PF No 12,” stated the Railways.

It stated that the “incident took place around 9.15 PM on the staircase of Platforms 14 and 15, where a large crowd had gathered to board trains heading to Prayagraj. Neither Platform change was made by Northern Railway at New Delhi Station, nor any special train had been cancelled.”

“It has been reported that the stampede like situation is believed to have been triggered by a sudden movement of passengers from Platform No 14 to board Special train at Platform No.12,” said the Railways.

Medical treatments were provided to the injured at Lok Nayak Jayprakash Narayan Hospital and Lady Harding’s College Hospital, said the Railways.

Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased, ₹2.5 Lakhs to those seriously injured and ₹1 Lakh to simply injured.  Compensation money has been distributed to the families of the victims, added the Railways. A high-level enquiry has been announced to probe the incident.
