
Nepal earthquake left 140 people dead

New Delhi, November 4: Local media reports confirmed a death toll of 140 people in the aftermath of the massive earthquake in Nepal around midnight on Friday. Several agencies are carrying out relief and rescue operations to save the people stuck in the debris as the earthquake flattened several dwelling units in the Himalayan nation.
Incidentally, Nepal is the 11th most earthquake nation in the world. The Himalayan nation is at a junction of two major earth plates. Last month also, on October 22, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake had rattled Kathmandu Valley.
“Earthquakes are common in Nepal which is situated on the ridge where the Tibetan and Indian tectonic plates meet and advance two meters closer to one another every century which results in pressure which is released in the form of earthquakes. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent aftershocks killed around 9,000 people in 2015,” The Kathmandu Post reported on Saturday, while quoting that the government’s post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA) report noted that Nepal is the 11th most earthquake-prone country in the world.
As many as 159 aftershocks were noted in the Himalayan nation which kept the people awake whole night. “Major earthquake of 6.4 intensity in Nepal today on November 3 at 11:30 IST. Need not to worry, Aftershocks will be milder. It is the meeting point to two tectonic plates. Indian and Eurasian plates,” Mahesh Palwat, a weatherman, posted on X.
Number of those killed in the earthquake of 6.4 magnitude which shook western Nepal just before midnight Friday has climbed to 140. – An equal number of people were injured in the incident. The death toll is expected to rise. – Around 159 aftershocks have been recorded following last night’s earthquake.
The Nepal earthquake had jolted even far areas of New Delhi while strong tremors were felt in West Bengal and Bihar. “According to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, the earthquake with an epicentre in Jajarkot district was recorded at 11:47pm. As per reports, Jajarkot and West Rukum have dealt the most damage, with 98 deaths in Jajarkot alone,” reported My Republica, a Nepal-based newspaper.
