New Delhi, February 26: The Chinese animated film ‘Ne Zha 2’ may soon take the spot of fifth highest grosser in history. Trade pundits estimate that ‘Ne Zha 2’ will soon surpass ‘The Force Awakens’ in box office collections.

The American film industry is watching the success of ‘Ne Zha 2’ with an awe. Hollywood commentators are particularly startled that the Chinese animated film is smashing all records without any American boost.

“Ticket sales are projected to reach $2.09 billion by the end of the film’s run,” Variety said in a report while quoting China’s box office ticketing agency Maoyan. The film magazine further stated that “Ne Zha 2 will emerge as the fifth-biggest movie in history behind Titanic ($2.26 billion) and ahead of The Force Awakens ($2.07 billion)”.

The Chinese animated film has already left ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ far behind in box office collections. The Marvel’s fourth movie of the superhero franchise has grossed just about $90 million. Its release had coincided ‘Ne Zha 2’.

“Ne Zha 2 is the biggest animated movie in history, surpassing 2024’s ‘Inside Out 2’ ($1.66 billion). Soon, it will be the first animated movie to cross $2 billion,” added Variety in its report.

It further stated that “Ne Zha 2 has already netted $1.9 billion”. The Chinese animated film grossed almost $2 billion with just 80,000 screens in four weeks.

“It’s now the highest-grossing movie in a single territory, overtaking 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned $936.7 million in North America,” said Variety, adding that ‘Ne Zha 2’ took just 11 days to break the record of 165 days of ‘The Force Awakens’.

The runaway success of ‘Ne Zha 2’ has also brought a tourism boom in China. Reports said that the people are thronging to destinations linked to mythological tale of ‘Ne Zha 2’.

“Visitor numbers to the Cuiping Mountain scenic area in Yibin, Southwest China’s Sichuan Province have surged,” said BBC in a report, adding that “the Nezha Palace, which was built in 1991 and was inspired by mythological stories, garnering increasing attention”.

The Chinese media stated that online searches for Ne Zha-related destinations such as Yibin and Jiangyou in Sichuan have seen massive surge. The people are particularly driving a surge in tourism in Xixia county, Central China’s Henan Province. They are thronging to attractions like the Ne Zha ancestral temple and Chentang Pass historical site, reports said.
