New Delhi, February 9: Beleaguered Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Bhalla. His resignation has come almost 18 months after the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur.
Singh in his resignation letter highlighted his efforts to “protect the interest of each Manipuri”. He also spotlighted that the Centre should continue with efforts to safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur.
The embattled Manipur Chief Minister faced demands of resignation from the Opposition. The Kuki leaders in Manipur also set his resignation as a precondition for initiating any reconciliation efforts.
The Meitei and the Kuki community members had been on a warpath since May 3 2023 when violence erupted in Manipur. The order of the High Court in the state on reservation had been blamed for the eruption of the ethnic violence. The Manipur CM belongs to the Meitei tribe.
Singh spotlighted four key issues in his resignation letter, saying that he had been working on them with the cooperation of the Centre. He stated in the resignation letter that the Centre should continue with efforts to achieve the aims of the four key issues.
“To maintain the territorial integrity of Manipur which has a rich and diver5se civilizational history over thousands of years…,:” Singh wrote in the letter, clearly spotlighting geographical unity of the violence-torn state.
Singh in his resignation letter also sought deportation of the illegal migrants. Reports said that a large number of illegal immigrants from Myanmar have taken shelters in the hills of Manipur under the patronage of the Kuki insurgents.
Singh also demanded a crackdown on border infiltration. He also urged upon the Centre to continue fighting the narco-terrorism and drug-trafficking.
The resignation of the Manipur CM has come just a day after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won Delhi Assembly elections. The BJP now faces the next electoral challenge in Bihar in October this year.
The Opposition had been attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the festering violence in Manipur. While several people have died and many are displaced, the Prime Minister’s inability to visit Manipur came under special attack by the Opposition.
The Centre by making changes in Governor of Manipur and neighbouring states signalled urgency to deal with the situation. Informed sources said that firm steps will be taken for the reconciliation of the Kuki and Meitei tribes in Manipur for restoration of peace in the state.
