RSS-BJP Tussle in Spotlight Amid Mohan Bhagwat’s Delhi Stay

By Amit Kumar

New Delhi, April 21, 2025: Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s Delhi visit has sent speculations within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wild. Will the RSS chief’s Delhi visit settle the issue of the BJP’s next president, asked a number of party leaders.

Bhagwat will inaugurate the new office building of the Akhil Bharatiya Parishad (ABVP) on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg on Tuesday. Bhagwat will launch a book on Saturday at the PM Museum also. “Bhagwat will launch the book, Hindu Manifesto, on Saturday,” sources in the RSS said.

But the buzz within the BJP is about the election of party’s next president. Speculations ran wild earlier that the BJP will elect its next president last month. But April month is also now almost in its last leg and there are no signs yet of the election of the next BJP president.

“There is no denying the fact that the delay in the election of the next BJP president is keeping the party leaders busy. Speculations are running wild that the RSS is not agreeing to names being suggested by the top BJP brass,” said a source in the BJP.

Incidentally, the incumbent BJP president JP Nadda has become the longest serving chief of the party with just one term in continuity. Nadda is on an extension as the BJP chief. The BJP had extended his term before the Lok Sabha elections.

“The manner in which the election is getting delayed is giving rise to wild speculations in the party. The meetings taking place at the residence of the top brass of the party are all seen in the context of the election for the next BJP president,” another source in the BJP said.

The RSS at its national executive meeting in Bengaluru had rejected the claims that there is a tussle with the BJP in choosing the next president of the party. But the political observers state that the RSS concurrence in picking up the next BJP president is a norm.

“The RSS wants a person as the BJP president who can function with independence and authority and not seen as a proxy of anyone in the organisation. This is possibly the reason for the delay in the election for the next BJP president,” the source added.

Bhagwat’s stay in Delhi is also being seen by political observers as an opportunity for the top brass of the BJP to iron out the differences. The RSS, sources said, has been unhappy with the “manner in which Nadda has been functioning as the president of the party”.
