NEW DELHI, September 11, 2025 — On September 11, a date that carries both the memory of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago address and the horror of the 9/11 terror attacks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose to reflect on another milestone: the 75th birthday of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat.

In a detailed article released today, Modi described Bhagwat as a “living example of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” praising his lifelong commitment to harmony, fraternity, and national regeneration. The Prime Minister drew on his own long association with the Bhagwat family, recalling how Mohanrao was shaped by his father, Madhukarrao Bhagwat, a prominent RSS organiser in Gujarat.

Tracing Bhagwat’s journey from becoming a Pracharak in the 1970s—during the dark days of the Emergency—to rising as the Sarsanghchalak in 2009, Modi argued that his tenure marks “the most transformative period in the 100-year journey of the RSS.” From introducing reforms in training camps to modernising outreach during the COVID-19 crisis, Modi said, Bhagwat has combined “continuity and adaptation” without compromising the organisation’s core ideology.

“Mohan Ji embodies both clear vision and decisive action,” the Prime Minister wrote, highlighting his role in mobilising swayamsevaks during national movements like Swachh Bharat and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and his push for the “Panch Parivartan”—social harmony, family values, environmental awareness, national selfhood, and civic duties.

With the RSS centenary coinciding this year with Gandhi Jayanti, Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti, and Vijaya Dashami, Modi cast Bhagwat as a leader steering the Sangh with intellectual depth, humility, and an ability to connect with the youth. He concluded with a personal wish: “I once again wish Mohan Ji a long and healthy life in service of Maa Bharti.”

Bhagwat today has turned 75 years of age. Modi will also turn 75 on September 17. Bhagwat in a recent interaction with the media ruled out an age ceiling for holding post of an office. Political observers linked Bhagwat’s denying an age ceiling for holding an office to a thaw in relations of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with the RSS.
