R N Ravi’s appointment has stunned Mamata Banerjee. The man who took on Nagaland’s extortion networks and fought DMK’s Stalin is now headed to India’s most politically explosive state.

New Delhi, March 5, 2026 — The Centre has made its most provocative political move yet in West Bengal. On the eve of what promises to be a do-or-die state assembly election, New Delhi has appointed R N Ravi — one of India’s most combative and controversial governors — as West Bengal’s new Governor, replacing C V Ananda Bose, who resigned abruptly.
The question now ricocheting through Kolkata and Delhi’s political corridors is blunt: is this a prelude to President’s Rule?
Who Is R N Ravi?
Ravi is not a ceremonial appointment. A former Intelligence Bureau officer and seasoned back-channel negotiator, he served as the Centre’s interlocutor in the critical Naga peace talks before being appointed Governor of Nagaland. There, he did not shy away from publicly naming the state’s entrenched extortion culture — a fact the regional NDA government had long preferred to leave unspoken. He clashed openly with Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, and in 2020 declared the Naga peace talk process effectively over.
Transferred to Tamil Nadu, Ravi was no less combative. His tenure there was defined by a running constitutional battle with Chief Minister M K Stalin and the DMK government, with repeated confrontations over bills, appointments and the limits of gubernatorial power.
His experience in managing central forces, overseeing civil administration in conflict-sensitive states, and pushing the constitutional boundaries of the Governor’s office makes him, in the Centre’s calculation, precisely the right man for West Bengal right now.
Mamata’s Fury
The announcement detonated like a political bomb in Kolkata. Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not hold back.
“Union Home Minister just informed me that Shri R N Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard,” Mamata posted on X.
Her aide and state minister Shashi Panja was even more direct. “Do you not want elections to take place in Bengal? Are you trying to take the state towards President’s Rule? Is there no Constitution?” she demanded.
Mamata herself suggested the outgoing Governor Bose may not have left entirely of his own free will. “Given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming state assembly elections,” she said.
She further argued that appointing a Governor without consulting the chief minister “undermines the spirit of the Constitution of India and strikes at the very foundation of our federal structure.”
The Bose Exit
C V Ananda Bose’s resignation added another layer of intrigue to an already volatile situation. “I have spent enough time at the governor’s office,” Bose told PTI tersely, offering no further explanation. Mamata described herself as “shocked and deeply concerned,” adding that the reasons behind his departure remained unknown to her.
Presidential Visit Adds to the Charged Atmosphere
The political temperature rises further with President Droupadi Murmu scheduled to visit West Bengal from March 6 to 7. She will inaugurate the Darjeeling Hill Festival marking the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, attend an exhibition at Lok Bhavan, and address the 9th International Santal Conference — a visit that, whatever its cultural intent, lands in the middle of a full-blown constitutional standoff between Kolkata and New Delhi.
With a tough new Governor in Raj Bhavan, a rattled Trinamool government, and election season bearing down on Bengal, the stage is set for one of the most consequential political confrontations the state has seen in years.
