By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi, June 18: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi has claimed that the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre can collapse any day. Gandhi told Financial Times that some of the allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are in touch with his party.

The Congress leader told the London-based daily that Indian politics has undergone a tectonic shift after the Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi hailed the Lok Sabha poll verdict.

While the Congress won a total of 99 Lok Sabha seats, the BJP’s tally came down from 303 in 2019 to 241 in 2024 polls.

“The idea of Narendra Modi has been destroyed,” Gandhi told the FT. He said that the people defeated the politics of hate with the verdict.

The Congress leader also told the business daily that the “image of Mr Modi has been destroyed”. He also asserted that the basic architecture of the “BJP has collapsed”. “The idea of creating religious hatred has collapsed,” added Gandhi in the interview to FT.

The FT said that Gandhi gave the first interview to the daily after the Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi credited the success of the Congress to the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’. “A lot of success came from those walks,” Gandhi told FT.

The Congress leader had taken out two legs of the yatra to connect with several regions of the country. The political observers have also stated that the Congress fared better in areas which were covered during the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’.

The Congress leader also told the FT that his party almost fought the elections with hands tied behind the back. It may be noted that the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections had alleged vendetta against the BJP-led government with bank accounts being curbed.

The Congress leader said that the Modi-led government at the Centre will struggle. “What worked for Modi in 2014 and 2019 did not work in 2024,” said Gandhi in the interview.

He also told FT that “this could be the reason for the instability of the government”. The Congress leader asserted that some of the allies of the BJP are in touch with his party. He refused to divulge further details.

“There is a great discontent within the Modi camp. There are people from within the camp who are in touch with us,” Gandhi told the FT in the interview.
