Dialogue Key to Building Stable Relationship: Modi on China

New Delhi, March 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi told a podcaster that “India-China co-operation” is good for the global good. Prime Minister also emphasised that dialogue is key to a stable India-China relations.
Prime Minister in a three-hour-long podcast with Lex Fridman spoke on India-China relations in the context of the 2020 Galwan violent confrontation. After a gap of five years, India and China officially resumed bilateral visits.
PMO in a media statement on podcast referred to the bilateral relations with India and China, saying: “Prime Minister emphasised their shared history of learning from each other and contributing to global good, highlighting that at one point, India and China together accounted for over 50% of the world’s GDP, showcasing their massive contributions”.
Prime Minister’s remarks assume significance amid US President Donald Trump slapping tariffs to intensify protectionism. The US has revived the trade war with China. The US will also be slapping reciprocal tariffs from April 2.
Prime Minister spoke of “the deep cultural connections, including the profound influence of Buddhism in China, which originated in India”. Modi stressed the importance of maintaining and strengthening the relationship between the two nations (India and China).
He acknowledged that differences are natural between neighbours but stressed the need to prevent these differences from escalating into disputes. “Dialogue is the key to building a stable and cooperative relationship that benefits both nations,” he added.
Addressing the ongoing border disputes, Prime Minister acknowledged the tensions that arose in 2020 but noted that his recent meeting with President Xi Jinping has led to a return to normalcy at the border.
Prime Minister had held a delegation level meeting with Xi at Kazan on the sidelines of BRICS Summit. Within the diplomatic community, the Xi-Modi meeting is now credited for the ‘Kazan Spirit’. Soon afterwards, Indian national security advisor Ajit Doval led a delegation to Beijing for the 23rd round of the meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, who is also foreign affairs meeting, for border management talks. India will host the Special Representative (SR) level talk this year. The SR level talk was resumed after a gap of five years.
Prime Minister highlighted efforts to restore conditions to pre-2020 levels and expressed optimism that trust, enthusiasm, and energy would gradually return. He emphasized that cooperation between India and China is essential for global stability and prosperity, advocating for healthy competition rather than conflict.
