After 16 Hours of Silence, PM Modi Acknowledges Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Exit as Vice President, Paving Way for Formal Acceptance

By TRH Political Desk

NEW DELHI, July 22, 2025 —Sixteen hours after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned in a huff, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence and signaled closure on the unfolding political drama.

“Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health,” Modi said in a cryptic post on X. The message, posted late Monday night, marked the first official response from the Prime Minister since Dhankhar’s surprise resignation became public.

Modi’s post came after a day of complete silence from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), even as the corridors of Parliament buzzed with speculation. Members of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) convened in the morning to assess the situation arising from the Vice President’s exit.

With the Prime Minister’s comment, the path is now clear for the formal acceptance of Dhankhar’s resignation. Sources confirmed that Dhankhar had already vacated his official office and sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu. Notably, his convoy was absent from the Parliament complex on Tuesday.

Political observers believe a communication breakdown between Dhankhar and NDA floor managers in Parliament may have precipitated the sudden resignation, which coincided with the opening day of the Monsoon Session. One theory making the rounds is that tensions escalated over an Opposition-led push for the impeachment of a judge, a matter Dhankhar was reportedly set to address.

Earlier, the Congress had urged PM Modi to intervene and persuade the Vice President to reconsider. “The sudden resignation of the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is inexplicable. I was with him, along with a number of other MPs, until around 5 PM today and spoke to him over the phone at 7:30 PM,” said Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in charge of communications, in a post on X.

Ramesh acknowledged that Dhankhar may need to prioritize his health, but added: “Clearly, there is far more to his totally unexpected resignation than meets the eye.” He further noted that Dhankhar had planned to chair a Business Advisory Committee meeting and was expected to make “major announcements related to the judiciary” the next day.

“We wish him good health but also urge him to reconsider his decision,” Ramesh said. He added, “We also expect the Prime Minister to get Mr. Dhankhar to change his mind. This will be in the nation’s interest. The farming community, in particular, will be greatly relieved.”

Dhankhar’s resignation, submitted with immediate effect and citing health reasons, has set off a wave of speculation in Lutyens’ Delhi, where sudden exits are rarely without deeper political context.

The Vice President still had several months left in his term. A lawyer by profession, Dhankhar hails from Rajasthan and previously served as Governor of West Bengal.

Despite frequent clashes with Opposition MPs — several of whom were suspended during his tenure as Rajya Sabha Chairman — Dhankhar maintained a complex political profile. He often drew attention for his sharp criticism of the judiciary and for defending the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during House proceedings. He also praised Modi after the BJP clinched a third consecutive win in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

With Modi’s message now public, the resignation saga appears headed for formal closure — though the political implications may linger much longer.
