NEW DELHI, July 2, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a five-nation tour spanning Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, aimed at deepening India’s engagement with key partners in the Global South and reinforcing its leadership in multilateral platforms like BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS, and CARICOM.
In a statement issued before departure, Modi outlined the significance of his visits to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, calling them “valued partners in the Global South” and emphasizing India’s commitment to strengthening democratic, developmental, and strategic cooperation across regions.
Ghana (July 2–3)
Modi’s first stop is Ghana, where he will meet President John Dramani Mahama. Describing Ghana as a “valued partner” in Africa and an important voice in the African Union and ECOWAS, the Prime Minister highlighted shared democratic values and historical bonds. His address to the Parliament of Ghana is expected to reinforce bilateral cooperation in energy, investment, security, healthcare, and capacity building.
Trinidad & Tobago (July 3–4)
The visit to Trinidad & Tobago underscores deep historical and cultural ties dating back 180 years, when Indians first arrived on the Caribbean Island. Modi will hold meetings with President Christine Carla Kangaloo, who recently participated as the Chief Guest at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, and newly re-elected Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The visit aims to revitalize ancestral connections and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Argentina (July 4–6)
Marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years, Modi’s stop in Buenos Aires reflects growing strategic convergence with Latin America’s second-largest economy. He will meet President Javier Milei, whom he met previously at the G20, to discuss deepening partnerships in agriculture, energy, critical minerals, trade, tourism, and technology.
Brazil & BRICS Summit (July 6–7)
In Brazil, Modi will attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, reaffirming India’s commitment to a more “just, democratic, and balanced multipolar world order.” On the sidelines, he will engage in bilateral discussions with world leaders and later travel to Brasilia for a bilateral state visit — the first by an Indian PM to Brazil in nearly six decades. Talks with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are expected to focus on economic cooperation and championing the interests of the Global South.
Namibia (July 8–9)
Modi’s final stop will be Namibia, where he will meet President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and address a Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament. Recalling India and Namibia’s shared anti-colonial history, Modi emphasized the importance of building a new roadmap of cooperation, particularly in development and regional solidarity.
Global South in Focus
“This tour is about more than bilateral agreements,” Modi said. “It is about strengthening the fabric of our friendships across the Global South and deepening our multilateral engagement.”
The visit comes at a time when India continues to position itself as a key voice of the Global South, pushing for equitable development, sustainable partnerships, and inclusive global governance.
The outcomes of this weeklong tour are expected to have far-reaching diplomatic and economic implications for India’s relations across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
