New Delhi, November 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the US President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday evening. The phone call followed prompt congratulatory message by Modi for Trump within moments of Republican bagging requite votes to stake claims to become the 47th President of the US.
“Had a great conversation with my friend, President Donald Trump, congratulating him on his spectacular victory. Looking forward to working closely together once again to further strengthen India-US relations across technology, defence, energy, space and several other sectors,” said Modi in a post on X after his telephonic conversation with Trump.

Modi and Trump are widely known to share camaraderie with personal bonding. Both the leaders have taken parts together in public meetings in India and the US in the past.
Trump in his Diwali message on November 4 had asserted that he would work with his friend PM Modi to deepen relations with India. Trump had also sided with India on the Bangladesh issue where India has been assertively raising the issue of violent attacks on the minority Hindus.
Trump had claimed that Hindus in Bangladesh have been subjected to “barbaric attacks on the watch of Joe Biden (the US President)”. While Trump is a protectionist, his presidency previously had seen warming up of bilateral relations with India.
Ahead of the outcome of the US Presidential Elections, Union Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Australia had reminded that the Quad was revived under the presidency of Trump. “It was during the Trump presidency that Quad was not only revived but a physical meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the member countries had taken place during the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Jaishankar in Australia.

Modi rushed to establish contacts with Trump amid recent attempts of Washington to turn heat on India over the failed assassination attempts on Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Biden had also raised eyebriws in India for hosting Sikh separatists at his Delaware residence ahead of the Quad Leaders’ Summit last month.
The US State Department had also been issuing regular statements in solidarity with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who made allegations against India over the killing of the Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canada later accused even Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah for targeting the Sikh separatists.
India has termed Canadian allegations absurd. Modi is widely known to have strong personal bonding with both Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Modi may per diplomatic community catch on initiatives to work out a breakthrough in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War.
