Modi counter-offensive against I.N.D.I.A eggs govt to rush with bills in Parliament

New Delhi, July 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought to wriggle out of the Manipur issue-led Parliament impasse by launching a scathing attack of the Opposition’s INDIA alliance. Modi, while addressing the parliamentary party meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, referred to East India Company, Indian Mujahiddin, Popular Front of India to claim that the Opposition alliance cannot have better fortune by getting India for the name of the alliance.
With Modi launching the counter offensive, the government pressed ahead with the legislative businesses in both the Houses of Parliament. The bills were taken up amid din, as the Opposition MPs remained in the well of the House. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also called a meeting of the floor leaders of all the parties to break the impasse. But there was no positive outcome, as the Opposition insisted on its demand for the prime minister to make a statement on the issue of violence in Manipur.
The BJP apparently has decided not to heed to the demand of the Opposition. With Modi clearly not in a mood to oblige the Opposition by making a statement, the government is learnt to have decided to push ahead with the legislative business, and ignore the Opposition protests. The BJP clearly is banking on the premise that the time will take care of the wounds of Manipur and the violence in the state will not have resonance in other parts of the country on a scale that the Opposition is hoping for.
Modi hit out at the Opposition in the BJP’s parliamentary party meeting, charging that the constituents are “defeated, tired, helpless…” He also said that the changing the name will not mean anything. The 26-party Opposition in its Bengaluru meeting had come out with the INDIA (Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance) in their bid to force a one-on-one electoral contest against the BJP.
The BJP chief JP Nadda also sought to add on to Modi’s counter-offensive against the Opposition, as he claimed in a tweet that “there was a child who regularly failed in exams; he was hated by his classmates and neighbours; so the parents thought to change his name to change the perception; isn’t the case similar to that of I.N.D.I.A”.
