Mithun Chakraborty’s Purse Stolen from Campaign Stage in Dhanbad

By Amit Kumar

Dhanbad, November 12: The star campaigner of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and film star Mithun Chakraborty came for a rude shock while campaigning in Dhanbad on Tuesday. Chakraborty became a victim of pickpocket while he was on the stage.

The onstage BJP leaders made fervent appeal to “anyone who had taken the purse of Mithun Da to return”. The appeal went on for several minutes but there was no relief for the BJP’s star campaigner.

Earlier, Chakraborty, heavily garlanded, appealed the people to vote for the BJP candidates in Dhanbad areas. He delivered film dialogues from his popular Bengali films.

“Hame rajneeti mat sikhana, hum kab kursi kheench lenge pata bhi nahi chalega (Don’t teach me politics, for I will pull the rungs under your feet and you will not even know),” said Chakraborty in his trademark style by angling forward his body and jerking his face sideways.

The film star is the BJP campaigner in parts of Jharkhand where Bengali speaking voters are in a large number. Dhanbad has sizable Bengali speaking voters.

“Pyar kabhi kam nahi karna, mar jayenge aashiq warna,” sang Chakraborty from his popular Hindi film Prem Pratigya. This film was Chakraborty’s hit in the lats phase of his film career in Mumbai. Popular actress Madhuri Dixit was the co-star of Chakraborty.

Donning a green cap of Che Guevara fame, Chakraborty mostly belted out film dialogues while canvassing for the BJP candidates. Guevara was a revolutionary icon from Cuba with a trademark cap that identified him worldwide. He was killed in a combat while taking part in a guerrilla warfare.

It was not immediately known if Chakraborty got his purse back from the pickpocket. It was also immediately not known if the purse had valuables.

The stage was heavy crowded. The BJP workers made appeals for the party workers to leave the stage while efforts were made to recover the stolen purse of the film star.

Visibly, Chakraborty became a victim due to the poor crowd management. Onlookers said that the people rushed to the stage to shake hands with the film star. The crowd was almost rushing onto the stage. The film star said that he was running late for another meeting while he sang the popular number from Prem Pratigya.

Parts of Jharkhand such as Dhanbad, Hazaribagh, Jamshedpur, Dumka, and a few more districts have sizable Bengali voters. The BJP claims to have a strong support base among the Bengali voters in Jharkhand.
